Movie Review: Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse

Pubescent Zombie Hunters

Looking for a comedic, action horror flick with hot babes and teenage humor? Look no further, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse has got you covered.

Just another zombie movie, right?

The story revolves around three friends that are the only members of a Boy Scout group, excluding their Scout Leader. Two of them, Ben and Carter, want to have a last camping night in the woods, before they tell Augie, member number three, that they want to move on from boy scouting to more teenage appropriate things, like going to party’s and hooking up with girls. And yes, you guessed it during this night they find out that a zombie outbreak has turned most of the towns residents into flesh eating corpses.

Boy Scouts

At first glance, it’s yet another zombie movie, one of many you might have seen through the years. Originality comes from the fact that here, the protagonists are suburban kids that have a Boy Scouting background. The Boy Scouting background doesn’t add a whole lot of originality to the movie but it does help to establish it’s own identity. There are also some coming of age undertones present that function as the heart of the story and adds a emotional layer to the zombie slaying mayhem that the movie is really all about. And yes I’m happy to say, the zombies themselves all look great, it didn’t give me a B-movie vibe at all. To top it off you”ll see some original looking zombies and zombie kills here and there.

Tacky attempts at humor

The comedic bits fit well within the movie but truth be told, the prepubescent humor got pretty tiring halfway through. It’s cheap, tacked on and feels like it’s just there to provide some extra shock value. You’ll know it when you see it. That said, the movie probably isn’t aimed at me as the target demographic. There is definitely chemistry between the leading actors which is really where the charm of the movie lies.

Conclusion

The acting is pretty decent, the zombies look fairly great, the story doesn’t do anything new and there’s is some tacky humor present. Is it fun? Yes, absolutely. As far as I am concerned I’d say it manages to rise a small step above mediocrity.
